The Daphne Lee Artistic Legacy $2500 Award

The Daphne Lee Artistic Legacy Award is only open to girls and women of color in the U.S.  The applicant must be at least a high school senior or student at a U.S. accredited public or private college or university or a full-time professional artist with demonstrated financial need.  A minimum of 3.00 cumulative GPA or equivalent at the institution from which he/she is applying is required for high school seniors and students enrolled at a college or university.


Eligibility

Must be a girl or women of color

At least a high school senior accepted to an credited 4 year college or university with a major in dance, music, acting or fine arts.

Must have demonstrated financial need to demonstrated financial need to pursue or complete their education.  

A full-time professional artist with demonstrated financial need.   


Selection Criteria

It is expected that recipients will demonstrate exemplary academic achievement. Preference will be given to dancers. Applicants will also have to complete a written personal statement and submit to finalize the application process. Other factors influencing in the award decision include:

  • High School or College Transcript

  • Letters of Recommendation

  • Portfolio, viodeo performance and/or website

  • Financial need (as determined by the Dephne Lee Artistic Legacy Award Scholarship Committee)

  • Proof of Enrollment or Acceptance in a College or University

Write an essay about why you should receive the award and how you intend to use the award to advance your academic or professional career.

Awards Available

The grand prize is a $2500 scholarship.

This scholarship will be granted annually and could increase each year, based on the amount of money available in the Daphne Lee Artistic Scholarship Award Fund.

Submission Requirements

  • The Daphne Lee Artistic Legacy Award Application Form

  • Professional Letter of Recommendation

  • Personal Letter of Recommendation

  • Personal statement length should be 500 words minimum.  Upon submission, the personal statement becomes the property of the Miss Black USA Scholarship Foundation, Inc.

  • Applicants in high school or enrolled in a college or university must provide proof of a 3.00 GPA or higher from the institution which he/she is applying. Unofficial transcripts meet this requirement.

  • Heashot and photo of yourself performing. The photo(s) will be used for publicity purposes on the Miss Black USA website.

  • Link to portfolio or website

  • Link to video of dance performance (for dancers)

  • Proof or enrollment as a full-time undergraduate degree candidate at an accredited four-year college/university in the United States.

  • Federal Financial Aid (SAR) report

Submission Deadline

Interested applicants may began submitting applications April 1, 2019. All submissions will be considered until June 15, 2019, 12 AM EST.

Accepting the Scholarship Award

Once a candidate is notified of winning, the candidate has three days to respond and accept the scholarship award. If the selected candidate does not respond within the allotted time, another winner will be chosen.

The winner will be announced on July 15, 2019.
