| Jasmine's Journey | Request Miss Black USA Talented Teen
On August 2, 2009, history was made as Jasmine Alexis was crowned the first Miss Black USA Talented Teen. In the twenty-three years of its existence, the Miss Black USA Scholarship Organization instituted a teen component to its tradition in the development of young women of color, “mind, body and spirit.” Competing against representatives from across the United States, Miss Alexis captured the prestigious honor of Miss Black USA Talented Teen.
Jasmine is currently a freshman attending Concordia University in Bronxville, New York.
A talented and accomplished dancer, Miss Alexis has won many first place awards in International Latin Ballroom Dancing, including the 2008 Mid-Atlantic Dancesports Championships, 2006, 2007, 2008 Philadelphia Dancesports Championships, 2008 Maryland Dancesport Championships, 2007 New Jersey Dancesports Classic and 2007 Atlantic Ballroom Competition. Jasmine has also participated as a member of several local performing dance groups such as Future Shock, the Washington Wizards Jr. Dance Team and the Washington Redskins All-Star Dance Team. She has also been the featured halftime entertainment for the NBA’s Washington Wizards.
Dedicated and committed to service projects throughout the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area, Jasmine’s volunteer and community work includes the Help the Homeless Walk-A-Thon, Ronald McDonald House, Covenant House, the Washington Home, Children’s Hospital “Queen For A Day”, Hoop Dreams, Veterans Bingo Night, DC Campaign to Prevent Teenage Pregnancy, Hispanic Heritage Foundation, USO –Metro DC, Greater Washington Urban League, DC Fashion Week, Redskins Toys-for-Tots, Project Giveback, 2009 Inauguration Presidential Classroom Speaker, Troop visit to Walter Reed Hospital, Howard and Hampton University.
Throughout her year of service, Jasmine will continue her support for JEWELGIRLS which is “an economic and art therapy program for adolescent girl survivors of human trafficking, sexual violence and street life.” Currently the program supports 200 teen women in Bosnia, Serbia, Russia, Uganda and Washington, DC. Through JEWELGIRLS, participants come together to create unique jewelry while gaining access to therapy, life and financial management skills leading to a pathway toward a future free of violence and poverty. The program is a safe way for girls to earn money for food, housing and basic necessities in order to one day, transition into schools and gainful employment.
